Today marks 59 years of the Auckland airport being an airport. On January 29, 1966, the Auckland New Zealand airport was open for business. Prior to the airport property being used for air travel, it was farmland, later being transformed into the nation’s largest hub for aviation enthusiasts.
Over the years the airport has evolved, seeing millions of dollars in revenue pass and utilized for extraordinary renovations. According to the Auckland Airport, the airport nearly doubled in size after $180 million redevelopment project in the 1990s.
Today, the airport employs over 30,000 people and connects the island nation to the rest of the world. It’s a place for hello and goodbye, economic growth, and home to numerous business and leisure travelers.
